Phoenix Model Flying Club

Archive (antique?) photos of Phoenix members past and present.

1967 and Dave Rudder's Warrior, scratch built from plans.
Powered by an AM.10 Diesel and controlled by a McGregor single channel radio.

And again the Warrior, single channel = press button once for left or twice for right, non incremental, simply rudder on or off

1968, and Dave's second Warrior, with an AM.15 Diesel.

Dr John Wyatt’s Merco 61 powered Spitfire.

Ray Watson taken at St.Angelo airfield, Co Fermanagh, in 1971, proudly showing off his Mini Perfection fitted with an H.P 40. Note lack of ailerons , even so Ray said it flew quite well and was fairly aerobatic for its day..!!
Ray Jennings of the Ulster MAC who designed the model says "The lack of ailerons was because the contest rules only allowed Rudder, Elevator and Throttle control. We called it Class2 aerobatics and it was a very popular event back then.

This Cossak 73 was another of Rays models from the 70`s (1973..?) It featured a fibre glass fuz and an Enya 60 up-front. Looks like it was able to do "the book" so to speak. The kit was from Tony Clarke's "Practical Scale" company shortly before they relocated to Germany (thanks to Ray Jennings of the Ulster Model Aircraft Club for the info).

Ray Watson, this time proudly holding his Dennis Bryant Fiesler Storch . It was covered in nylon and epoxi-cote and dates back to 1975. Thinks this picture was also taken at County Fermanagh.

another picture of Rays Storch...!!!

Seen here crouching, chairman Peter Watts checks his "Hi-Fly" glider prior to flight.
This picture was taken around the mid 70s, the little boy in the background is Peter's son who is now 29!

Hardwick pit view, taken in august 96 at our first scale day. The 1/3rd scale Pitts special now "lives" on the ceiling of Anglia Model Centre. That's Ben Trowbridge with his back to the camera. The couple sitting down are John and Dawn Vrieshma who owned the Lazer, the Regal Eagle and the Pitts Special. Sadly John no longer partakes in the hobby due to family commitments.

Peter's 1/4 scale SE-5 on a "bad day at Hardwick". Can he rebuild it?

Peter Watts shows that not only can he reduce a scale SE-5 to matchsticks but also make a fetching hat out of it. Seriously, this picture was taken 2 weeks after the above crash! 2nd place in the '96 scale day!

1993, while Phoenix was flying from Caldecott Hall.
Peter shows off the fashion of the day - matching plane and overalls.

Phil Wyld ("with hair") getting it up at Caldecott.

.......and Tom Taylor, from many "moons" ago.
